The number of Indian students studying abroad has increased significantly, with over 1.3 million students enrolled in educational institutions across 79 countries. The UK, US, Australia, and Canada are the most popular destinations for Indian students. A major deciding factor for Indian students is the destination country's policy on dependents, such as partners and children. The number of Indian students pursuing education overseas has witnessed a remarkable surge, with more than 13,00,000 students currently enrolled in educational institutions across over 79 countries. Among these, traditional study destinations including the UK, US, Australia, and Canada stand out as the most sought-after choices for international education.

For post graduate studies, or higher, a big deciding factor for Indian students looking to go abroad is the destination country's policy on dependents- partners and children of primary visa applicant.

"These policies are vital considerations for prospective students, as they evaluate their options based on the potential to bring their families along, spousal employment opportunities, and the overall accessibility of quality education and healthcare for dependents," Karunn Kandoi, Chief Experience Officer at ApplyBoard, said.

Australia’s increasing love for families

In February 2023, Australia increased post-graduation work periods for international students at all study levels. Six months later, the Australian government announced it may allow international students to immigrate via education as Australia seeks to bolster its workforce.

New Australian data indicates that half a million international students were granted a primary visa in 2022/23, a 42% increase over the previous record high. Over 261,000 international students were granted a student visa in higher education in 2022/23.

That represented 52% of all student visas granted in the Australian education sector, and marked growth of 38% over 2018/19. Chinese students accounted for 31% of student visas granted in higher education, while Indian students accounted for another 24%. A total of 85,844 Indian students were granted student visas between 2022 and 2023.

The US appears well-positioned to attract students with dependants, although the increase may not be substantial compared to other major destination markets.

Australia, on the other hand, is poised to see a significant influx of students with dependants. The recent pro-immigration policy changes in Australia are expected to contribute to the long-term growth of this market.
