A gleeful Putin has declared that China is 'in tune with Russian ideas' as President Xi has praised the two countries' 'continually deepening mutual trust' while attending a luxurious banquet in Beijing.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin also stressed that close political coordination was 'necessary in current difficult times'.

'We have repeatedly pointed out that Russia and China and the majority of states in the world share aspirations for mutual cooperation, for comprehensive and sustainable economic progress, and social well-being,' he added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also called for joint efforts by China and Russia to 'safeguard international fairness' and 'justice', Beijing's state news agency Xinhua reported, hailing the 'close and effective strategic coordination' between their two countries.

The pair met at a banquet in Beijing today, which representatives of 130 countries are attending as part of a forum on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Xi's vast trade and infrastructure project.

The forum is Putin's first trip to a major global power since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine threw his regime into international isolation.

In an address that followed Xi's, Putin praised the BRI saying that China is 'in tune with Russian ideas' and invited global investment in the Northern Sea route which he said could deepen trade between east and west.

Several European officials left the hall as Putin took to the stage.

Xi is making the Belt and Road smaller and greener, moving away from big-ticket projects like dams to high-tech ones such as digital finance and e-commerce platforms.

The aim is to aid a broader push for a world order that is multi-polar and gives the Global South more agency, rather than one dominated by Washington and its allies, analysts say.

The BRI has also become more focused on issues such as climate change and artificial intelligence.

Xi seeks to use the BRI to export Chinese ideas about governance and build consensus around Chinese norms and its development model, analysts say.

During his speech, Xi said: 'Bilateral trade volume has reached a historical high, which is progressing toward the goal of 200 billion US dollars set by the two sides.'
