In a horrifying revelation, more than 50% of kids have faced sexual abuse. This truth was reported in a survey conducted with 12,500 school kids, aged 5-18 years, belonging to 13 different states in India! Plan International, a London based organization conducted the survey.

Accordig to the survey India is ranked third in the list of 13 countries, in terms of estimated economic cost caused by corporal punishment. The organization has calculated that India loses an amount of $ 1.4 – 7.4 billion every year in terms of social benefits, all because of the physical treatment given by schools.

Corporal punishment is a common feature in Indian schools, and the survey just confirmed it. More than 65% students, and mostly from state schools, said that they were beaten. In the schools surveyed by the Plan International, there were atleast five beatings of students, per day!

Physical ill treatment like slapping children with hand or with a cane, or making them stand up in various positions is extremely common in majority of schools. Even the majority of students who were interviewed seem to be conditioned to thinks so! However what’s shocking is that one in every two children was sexuall abused! It is high time we get more involved with our kids schools and education.
