Who Is Mrinank Sharma? AI Safety Head Who Quit Anthropic With ‘World In Peril’ Warning
Mrinank Sharma, a senior AI safety researcher and head of the Safeguards Research Team at Anthropic, resigned from the company. Mrinank Sharma, who joined Anthropic in 2023, announced his exit through a note shared publicly, signalling a sharp break from his work on advanced AI systems at one of the world’s most influential artificial intelligence firms. Anthropic, led by CEO Dario Amodei, is widely seen as a key player shaping the future of AI through its Claude models and its public emphasis on safety and responsible development. What Mrinank Sharma Said In His Resignation Letter? In his resignation note, Mrinank Sharma framed his decision in philosophical and moral terms rather than professional ones. “The world is in peril," he wrote, adding that the danger does not stem only from AI, but from “a whole series of interconnected crises unfolding in this very moment." Mrinank Sharma suggested that humanity’s ability to affect the world has grown faster than its collective wisdom, warning that the imbalance could lead to serious consequences. He also hinted at an internal struggle between values and practice within large organisations. “Throughout my time here, I’ve repeatedly seen how hard it is to truly let our values govern our actions," he wrote, referring both to himself and to the organisation. Rather than continuing to focus on making AI systems more transparent or less sycophantic, Mrinank Sharma said he feels drawn toward writing as a way to engage with the present moment. He argued for placing “poetic truth alongside scientific truth" as equally important ways of understanding the world, especially during periods of rapid technological change. Mrinank Sharma said he now hopes to explore a poetry degree and devote himself to what he described as “the practice of courageous speech." Who is Mrinank Sharma? Mrinank Sharma is an AI researcher of Indian origin with an academic background from some of the world’s top institutions. He holds a DPhil in Machine Learning from the University of Oxford and a Master of Engineering in Machine Learning from the University of Cambridge. He joined Anthropic in 2023 and went on to lead the Safeguards Research Team, which was formed in February last year. The team worked on reducing risks in advanced AI systems, including behavioural issues and alignment concerns, at a time when Anthropic has been positioning itself as a leader in AI safety. -
