We used to live in Vanasthalipuram - a little distance away from HARINA VANASTHALI or "deer park" as it was locally called. I absolutely loved going there as a kid and as an adult - as I am a big wild life enthusiast. I really treasured this island of greenery in what then was considered the outskirts of the city. It had a small safari van to take you inside the protected forest and I loved watch various kinds of deer, wild boars, peacocks etc. They even had a small theater to show some wild life documentaries. All this to say - it proved a hit with the locals especially during summers because this deer park would provide for a welcome relief during hot summers. Rumor or not back in the day - apparently an effort was made to convert this deer park into an airport and I remember being furious. I hope this deer park still exists to this day. Other than providing much needed forest/cover for the city - it also provides yeoman service as an educational figurehead to school kids and really anyone who is interested in the environment.
