Tamil Nadu would have become Bihar if not for Catholics': Speaker's remark sparks row

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M Appavu on Monday sparked controversy after he attributed the development of the state to Christian missionaries and said the state would have become another Bihar if not for the work done by Catholic missions.

He claimed that it was Catholic missionaries that shaped his career, adding that the government belonged to the people who "fast and pray to God".

Why Bihar is the default state to degrade by other Indians. Other state Indians always worry and say that their state will become Bihar if rival party comes to power.

In 1990-91, Bihar's per capita state GDP was Rs 2,660, India's per capita net national income was Rs 5,365 

In 2019-20, Bihar’s per capita income was Rs 46,664, stuck at 34% of India’s Rs 1.34 lakh

Bihar’s per capita income in 2019-20 fell to 33% of India’s from 49% in 1990-91 

While rest of india was privatising after 1991 , laloo doubled down on socialism
