Layoffs at EY (from expats forum)

I have a total experience of 10 years, all with Big 4 and last 8 years I have been with EY. Out of nowhere EY announced layoffs on Monday and by today 60% of my team has been laid off. I spoke to each and everyone this evening. There were tears, frustrations and sadness all around. These are the people who were logging in at least 55 hours per week and god knows where those hour’s are when we are responding to RFPs. We worked into weekend and into midnights even for many Friday evenings without hestitations. In fact, two of my managers( I am Senior Manager, so they report into me) still wrapped up few open client items for me this morning right before and after walking into that lay off calls, they knew that they have been shortlisted by yesterday evening. I was surprised by their integrity. Except for couple all of them are top performers, and few have been with firm for 10 years. I had no say in these decisions, in fact not even partners/principals we report into were asked for inputs in these decisions. 

These are super smart, hardworking, with MBA degree from prestigious universities and Big 4 brand backing them (as much as I hate it at this moment, it means something in market). They will get back on their feet soon but I couldn’t just accept what they are going through today. One was sobbing, the other was saying how she has elaborate Christmas planned and wondering how cruel firm could be to do it right before Christmas, another was talking about how she hates to be perceived as free rider of her boy friend. None of them deserved this. I don’t know who I am going back to after I come back from vacation. I lost all my managers except one, my peer senior managers (I am only one SM left in our team at least as of this evening I have a job). It is a wake up call to me and may be to few other’s expediting it first hand to not prioritize companies that throws you under bus at first chance, ask yourself is this worth the effort and make smart choices!!!
