ShruteSastry Posted December 14, 2023 Report Posted December 14, 2023 I loved the movie, Should have watched it in theater. Karthik Subbaraj is a very good Writer and Director. He became director from a talent hunt, he made Pizza, Jigarthanda. I went to Madurai, and tried Jigarthanda (its a sweet drink like rose milk) after watching the movie. 1 Quote

Do you have any incidents IRL, mainly MGR? Amma is infamous for vengeance. the entire movie is set in that period. there are plenty of scenes.. within the first 10mins you see Karmegam's son movie release in theatres in south TN in competition with Jeyakodi's movie.. here Jeyakodi is MGR, and Karmegam is karunanidhi. aa thread patkoni choodu, cinema mothham real life TN political incidents ni satire chesindeh Quote

He was trying to one up karunanidhi all the time, because he has no ideology of his own. his overtures towards LTTE prabhakaran for instance, is purely to piss off Karunanidhi who was already forming a coalition of srilankan tamil revolutionaries to present a cogent agenda on sl tamils to the government of India. MGR pulled TN back by a couple decades during his rule is the general consensus. He did immeasurable damage to TN. Quote

How did he pull back TN? I thought he was already rich so he was not seen as corrupt like Karunanidhi family? Quote

He simply rode on the back of his popularity as an actor, and on his welfare schemes, which didn't even materialize because poverty in TN remained unchanged during his rule. he sat on several water projects in a state that is generally water starved, until NTR generously offered Telugu ganga project to madras, and even in that he wasn't interested in seeing it to fruition. the guy is more interested in building up his image than doing anything concrete. and he was extremely corrupt, just that media was not allowed to write about his corruption. Jigarthanda is the first movie I saw that had a character based on MGR, which showed him as a villain. And Karunanidhi as slightly just a little bit heroic.. which is nice. MGR is a name, along with Jayalalitha, that should be viewed as tyrant by the Tamil people. compared to MGR, Karunanidhi is an angel. a scholar. a true politician. not a tyrant. Quote
Raven_Rayes Posted December 19, 2023 Report Posted December 19, 2023 inspite of my reservations about how tribals are portrayed as good hearted human beings, (which they are not) Jigarthanda made me a little bit emotional.. such a fun movie to watch, until it got very heavy and emotional towards the end. fine movie. the best mass masala movie I've watched in a long time. It was MGR who relaxed a prohibition on sale of liquor, and increased excise duty on it to such an extent that at the time around 15% of state's revenue came from liquor excise duty.. (for comparison, currently its about 5% of the state's income).. this affected the poor mostly because overwhelming majority of liquor sold was country liquor. income from direct taxes like land revenue, urban land tax etc which used to account for 5% of the state's revenue fell to 1% during his rule. So much for his image of 'man of the poor'.. in reality, the rich class was the beneficiaries of his rule. inka chaala cheppochhu. Him not revising minimum wage for farm labourers in the state throughout his rule. Not spending the money earmarked for rehabilitation of bonded labourers overall throughout his rule, the poverty level remained unchanged, and he brought untold misery upon the poor. Quote

Jayalalitha did such stuff too in the 90s and even in 00s when she was in power. Quote

MGR was so intent on silencing media, that he even passed a law to stop screening of films and plays critical of the govt, even films that were certified by CBFC. thanneer, thanneer ani oka play ni dwamsam chesaru, that showed plight of rural poor wrt access to water and govts carelessness to their problems. taravatha it was made into a movie by balachander (who was quite popular), and then the mgr govt tried to get it banned.. and when it didnt work, they pressurized theatres against screening the movie. ee level repression of civil society TN lo jaragaley when DMK was in power. MGR was a monster. Jayalalitha another monster. Quote
