It sets a precedent for others that there will be consequences for breaking rules 

Say whatever you want about american police but if anyone is ever found to have committed such acts they will be dismissed and charged with covering up a crime

Google search the police constable story who witnessed the Salman khan driving incident killing people sleeping on streets. He was honest and did not budge to pressure. He was blamed and dismissed from service. He was denied jobs everywhere. Later he became begger on streets. Died after that. His family shattered. 

Thats the bitter truth of being honest and going against powerful people in India. US is different. Comparing both is not same.
