Whose regime the temple structure which now supporting mosque is built ? What is the point of this question? Are you implying that there was no temple there? Are you questioning the authenticity of Varanashi (which is supposed to be one of the oldest cities in the world)? Or are you just too lazy to do your research?? Anwyays, Before anyone talks about the history of temple..the jyothirlinga there existed as far as human history is documented.. It is believed as Swayambhu linga ..even if we don't believe in the theory of Swayambhu..atleast that shrine (linga shaped rock) has been there before any temple was built and was worshipped by the people.. One of the Tamil Nayanars called Sambandar sung and wrote in Vaippu Sthalams and This nayanar lived during 7th Century CE. Adi Sankaracharya visited and wrote songs like "Kala Bhairava Ashtakam"..in 7th century CE.. Now coming to the history of temple..It is documented that the first known temple was built by King Vikramaditya atleast 2500 years back..after that there were multiple kings who continued to build and develop the temple .. Destruction - The Varanasi city in general and the Temple more specifically has gone through multiple destruction attempts.. starting from 1194..all the way till 1800's ..Gyanwapi mosque was last built by Aurangazeb in 1669.. The temple which telugu language inscriptions found is built in 1585. In 1585, Narayan Bhatta built a magnificent new temple, under the patronage of the great emperor Jalauddin Akbar - only for it to be reduced to ruins by Aurangzeb. Quote
