It all started when they acquired McDonnell Douglas 28 years ago. Within decade and half , cost cuts and poor software design (not programming. Program works as per the design suggested by boeing aviation design engineers) killed the reliability and safety standards. 

It will take 2 more decades to get back on track if they change their approach now.
