Armenia opens world's longest aerial tramway

The world's longest aerial tramway has been opened in Armenia today by the president, Serzh Sargsyan.

The president, Serzh Sargsyan, Catholicos Karekin II and six children from the surrounding villages became the first passengers of this tramway, say the local press.

The total cost of the project is around 45 million USD. Armenian born, Russian businessman, Ruben Vardanyan, is said to have donated around 28 million USD.

The tramway is 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles) long. Till now the world's longest tramway was the 4-kilometer-long (2.48-mile-long) Sandia Peak Tramway in the United States' Santa Fe.
