The grandfather of the 17-year-old Pune boy, who is accused of running his Porsche car over two people, had allegedly made payments to gangster Chhota Rajan in a shootout case, police sources have told News18, as officials probe the weekend crash involving the teen that has triggered massive outrage.

According to official sources and documents accessed exclusively by News18, Surendra Kumar Agarwal, the father of prominent real estate developer Vishal Agarwal, was named in a shootout case in Pune that was registered at the Bund Garden police station and later transferred to the CBI. The accused had even sought anticipatory bail in the matter.

News18 has learnt that the alleged ‘supari’ was paid with respect to a corporator in Pune. It was in 2009 that corporator Ajay Bhosale, who was out on a poll campaign, was fired at by two men in Koregaon Park. Though he escaped unhurt, his driver sustained serious injuries.

Official documents show that after the case was transferred to the CBI, the agency had found that SK Agarwal had allegedly paid Chhota Rajan for the hit on Bhosale in connection with a property dispute. The case was passed to the CID and then to the CBI after the police failed to solve it as it was unable to pinpoint the mastermind behind the attempt on the corporator’s life. In 2020, however, the CBI alleged that SK Agarwal had paid Chhota Rajan for the hit following which the builder sought anticipatory bail from the Bombay High Court.

News18 also exclusively spoke to Bhosale, the target of the hit back then. He said he had filed a writ petition against the CID and also questioned as to how SK Agarwal was granted anticipatory bail. “How was he given anticipatory bail? He still comes to the court. All victims should get justice,” he said.

Vishal Agarwal, whose son is accused of killing two software engineers after he crashed his speeding luxury car into their motorcycle, was arrested on Tuesday (May 21) from Sambhajinagar. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for the teenager to be tried as an adult after the victims’ parents called their children’s deaths “murder” and demanded strict action. Fadnavis said there is no police negligence in the matter, while denying any kind of pressure on the probe.

However, the boy was granted bail on a surety of Rs 7,500 and an assurance from his grandfather to keep him away from bad company. Months away from turning 18, he was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board hours after the crash on relatively lenient conditions.

“His grandfather has given an assurance that he will keep the Child-in-Conflict with Law (CCL) away from any bad company and he will concentrate on his study or any vocational course useful for his career. He is ready to abide by the condition imposed on him. Therefore, it is just and proper to release the CCL on bail,” stated the order passed by the Juvenile Justice Board on May 19.
