Because King Ashoka never existed. There are no archeological proofs for his existence not circumstantial evidence. The rock edicts unearthed in multiple places, doesn't even say name Ashoka, goes with the name Piyadassi. The numbers of deaths in supposedly battle of Kalinga had no standing either. There are no evidence to prove the number, nor any circumstantial evidence including accounts from locals about battle of Kalinga. Quote
