get in to data science or pick any programming lan like java... be strong in it.... those will be always green.... dont bother about trendy tech

Totally possible, I know people who did that.
 

Apply directly, but tough if outside company, easier if inside company.

Apply for consulting PM jobs in your target company. If this happens, wait for 6 months and apply internally with good referrals from current team
