UPS to Cut 20,000 Jobs After Amazon Breakup

United Parcel Service (UPS) delivered better-than-expected first-quarter earnings on Tuesday, but the positive results were accompanied by a stark announcement: the company plans to cut up to 20,000 jobs and close dozens of facilities in response to a slowdown in Amazon deliveries and broader economic uncertainty.

 

Amazon volumes drop, triggering network overhaul

UPS has long counted Amazon (AMZN) as its biggest customer, but the delivery giant is pulling back from that partnership due to shrinking profit margins.

In January, UPS announced plans to cut Amazon parcel volumes by over 50% within 18 months.

The current move, which includes closing 73 leased and owned buildings by the end of June, is the next phase of that shift.

The job cuts, which would affect around 4% of UPS’s roughly 490,000 employees, will impact operational roles such as delivery drivers and package handlers.

This follows a separate announcement earlier this year that 12,000 management jobs would also be eliminated.

EA lays off hundreds of employees, cancels Titanfall game again as gaming cuts continue

The latest round of job cuts follow an already difficult stretch for EA, which laid off over 1,100 employees in 2023.

The wave of layoffs in the gaming industry continues, with EA confirming fresh job cuts and the cancellation of yet another unannounced game. On Tuesday, the publisher said it made “targeted team adjustments”. However, a report by Bloomberg suggests that between 300 and 400 jobs have been cut — including around 100 at Respawn Entertainment. Among the casualties is a long-rumored Titanfall project, once again shelved before reaching full production.

Earlier this month, EA announced Star Wars: Zero Company, a tactical game set in the Star Wars universe, signaling its continued commitment to IPs it considers commercially reliable. But the studio’s renewed focus comes at a cost — and Titanfall fans are once again left disappointed.

Code-named “R7,” the canceled Titanfall game was reportedly an extraction shooter that would have expanded the franchise’s mech-and-parkour universe. Respawn acknowledged cancelling two early-stage projects but didn’t name them. The studio said it would instead shift focus to more established moneymakers like Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series.

These cuts follow an already difficult stretch for EA, which laid off over 1,100 employees in 2023. In 2024, it trimmed another five percent of its global workforce. “These decisions aren’t easy,” Respawn said in a statement, thanking departing team members and acknowledging their impact on the studio’s growth.

The broader industry is in similar straits, with studios large and small slashing teams and scrapping projects amid shifting market conditions and rising production costs.
