Buddhist King Asoka is a British Creation by James Princep. No comparison with Hindu legends like  Chatrapathi Shivaji and Cholas.

Most of the textbook history is a British and lutyen propagation (post transfer of power from the crown).  Which is why you see made up heros like Asoka, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, so on.

Valor stories of Hindu Kings  are  often cut short.  Pre Islamic history itself is restricted to couple of pages  in school history books. Even state board books are no exception. United Andhra 10 th exams had stupid 5 mark and 10 mark questions on Islamic rule like reforms made by Auragnazeb and then that of crown like explain Zamindari or (vs) jaghiridari systems,  Simon commission etc.

Shivaji Maharaj initially confined his son Sambhaji to Panhala Fort in 1678. This confinement was reportedly due to Sambhaji's alleged "addiction to sensual pleasures" or accusations of violating a Brahmin woman. Sambhaji later escaped and joined the Mughals, fighting against his father before returning and being confined again at Panhala.

There's no concept of India at that time...if it does, there wouldn't be kashmir, nizam , Rajasthan, mysore kingdoms allied with British rulers till independence and beyond.

Same is case with goa, pondicherry etc..

Not just India, most countries are like that before 19th century.

"Country pride " started in recent past and world war 1 is beginning of that. What do you say ?
