It's because of having no collective identity telugu people resorted to caste identity ,even tamil society had the same amount of fragmentation based on caste lines but Dravidian movement reduced it a lot and brought them under one tamil identity .

I told there is no caste "hierarchy" I never told there are no castes in andhra tbh it's a mistake I should have called them communities not castes but caste is used interchangeably with community in general so I didn't bother.

These people are the ones who have been living for 1000's of years ,they have just changed their religion .
