'Afraid of our talent': Minister Goyal after US H-1B shocker, sees bright sign for India's growth

India's commerce minister Piyush Goyal, who will in the US on September 22 for the next round of talks for a trade deal amid tensions over tariffs, made remarks apparently reacting to President Donald Trump's decision to impose a hefty $100,000 fee on H-1B visas used mostly by high-skilled Indian workers to fulfil their American dream.

He prefaced it with the assertion that “different countries across the world also want to do Free Trade Agreements with India”.

“They want to increase trade with India. They want to improve relations,” he said, in a video clip from a speech that he shared on his X handle.

With a pause and smile, he added, “They are also a little afraid of our talent. We have no objection to that either.”

He exhorted the Indian talent to “come to India, innovate here, design here”. He said that will make the economy grow even more rapidly: “So we are winners, come what may.”

Trump's H-1B visa fee hike poses risk to India's remittances, rupee

The potential dent in remittances could put further pressure on the rupee, which has already been among Asia's worst performers

Highly skilled Indian migrants in wealthy nations are a vital source of cash for the country, steadily increasing the money they send home over the years. The US alone provides nearly 28 per cent of these inflows — roughly $35 billion a year, Citigroup Inc. economists, including India economist Samiran Chakraborty, estimated.

“As the number of H-1B visa holders from India declines in future years, this will reduce the remittances back to India,” JP Morgan analyst Toshi Jain wrote in a client note. In a worst case scenario, if Indians applying for H-1B visas fell to zero, the annual remittances would decline by about $400 million, Jain added.

The potential dent in remittances could put further pressure on the rupee, which has already been among Asia’s worst performers. The currency slipped 0.1 per cent to 88.20 per dollar in early Monday trading.

Economists also warned that the visa changes could disrupt India’s $280 billion IT services industry, which depends on the H-1B program to deploy engineers to overseas clients. Stocks of leading outsourcers, including Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and Infosys Ltd., slid over 3 per cent on Monday amid concerns the fee hike will complicate operations.
