Tyrannosauraus_Rex Posted October 10 Report Posted October 10 Do you still read traditional newspapers? There's a surfeit of news sources these days - mainly online (facebook, X etc.,) so I am wondering if there's anyone who reads newspapers at all. I subscribe to and read a couple of newspapers. Mainly because given my job - I heavily interact in person and over email in English with my colleagues at work. It is hyper critical for my job to display high proficiency levels in English. 1) The Hindu - I am just so addicted to it now and I cannot get rid of it even if I wanted to. I credit The Hindu for single handedly improving my proficiency in English and also engendering interest in a lot of topics. While The Hindu as a newspaper has a fairly visible political bias - it undoubtedly is a serious newspaper and a gold standard for high quality editorials and opinion pieces. One of my favorite early memories of reading The Hindu is to draw a line underneath words that I did not know the meaning to and look up a physical dictionary to learn their meanings. The whole newspaper used to be filled with my underlines of the words. Honestly, only after reading The Hindu I realized how critical it is a for a nation and a democracy to have a robust newspaper system to sustain a well informed citizenry. 2) The Wall Street Journal - for a very long time in my stay in the US, I did not subscribe to any US newspapers. My wife occasionally used to purchase local Virginia publications but fairly recently just before the 2024 elections I started subscribing to WSJ and I do not regret it for one moment. While The Hindu will always be my number one love - WSJ obviously is more US centric and thus whets my appetite for US related news. So for members here - how or where do you get your news from? While I do read these two traditional newspaper sources - I do now get my news from a wide variety. For Telugu - there's not particularly one source - since all the newspapers are freely available digitally. Quote
