Bailouts and significant investments

IDBI Bank (2018): This was one of LIC's most prominent bailouts. It acquired a 51% controlling stake in the debt-ridden IDBI Bank, which required an estimated investment of ₹18,000–20,000 crore.
Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) (2018): When the infrastructure conglomerate IL&FS defaulted on its debt, LIC, one of its largest shareholders, stepped in to rescue the company.
Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) divestments: LIC has been consistently used by the government to invest in the Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and follow-on public offers (FPOs) of other state-run companies, particularly when market interest is low.
2018–2019: LIC bailed out the IPOs of five state-owned firms—Hindustan Aeronautics, New India Assurance, Mishra Dhatu Nigam, Bharat Dynamics, and General Insurance Corporation of India. In these issues, LIC alone bought shares worth ₹14,520 crore, which accounted for approximately 55% of the total funds raised by the government.
2010: A bailout of around ₹11,000 crore was conducted to save the government's disinvestment program, with LIC investing heavily in the FPOs of NMDC and NTPC.
