A 23-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh was found dead in her apartment in the United States on November 7, leaving her family and friends in deep shock. The student, identified as Rajyalakshmi (Raji) Yarlagadda, had recently graduated from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi and was actively looking for a job after completing her studies, The Times of India reported.

According to her cousin, Chaitanya YVK, who launched a GoFundMe campaign from Denton, Texas, Raji had been suffering from a severe cough and chest pain for two to three days before her death. On the morning of November 7, she reportedly did not respond to her alarm, and her friends later discovered that she had passed away in her sleep.

In the fundraiser appeal, Chaitanya said Raji had travelled to the US with dreams of securing a better future for her family, who depend on farming in Karmechedu village of Bapatla district, Andhra Pradesh. “She was a bright, hopeful soul who dreamed of helping her parents continue their farming journey," he wrote.

The family’s farmland, crops, and livestock form their only source of income. Raji, the youngest in her family, had hoped to ease their financial burden once she began working. Her sudden death has left them not only grief-stricken but also struggling with financial distress, The Times of India said.

The GoFundMe campaign seeks support for funeral expenses, transportation of her body to India, repayment of her educational loans, and some financial assistance for her parents. A medical examination is underway in the US to determine the cause of death.

Meanwhile, members of the Indian community in Texas have come forward to help expedite the repatriation process, with assistance expected from the Indian consulate.

It's highly irresponsible not to go to the hospital with symptoms like a severe cough and chest pain. And no, you don't need insurance to go to the ED. All patients will be screened for life-threatening conditions and treated and stabilized in the ED, regardless of insurance status.
