Trump threatens to fire Bessent if Fed doesn't further cut interest rates

President Donald Trump conceded in a speech on Wednesday that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been privately urging him not to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

“The only thing Scott is blowing it on is the Fed because the Fed, the rates are too high, Scott. If you don’t get it fixed fast, I’m going to fire your ass,” the president said during remarks at the Kennedy Center.

The president then appeared to suggest that Bessent has been the “voice of reason” urging him not to fire Powell, while Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick “is a little bit more for firing him.”

“Please don’t fire him. He’s got three months to go,’” the president said appearing to repeat what Bessent has told him.

“I want to get him out,” the president said reenacting their conversation.

“I think Howard is a little bit more for firing him. I think Howard would say give him the hell out of there,” the president said

It is the first time the president has appeared to suggest that Bessent was the voice urging him to keep Powell in his role until the end of his term.
