Now, after 200 years, the nation must finally free itself India’s schools have paid a heavy price for following the colonial mindset of a British baron, the PM says. Now, after 200 years, the nation must finally free itself Narendra Modi says Thomas Babington Macaulay “broke India’s self-confidence and instilled a sense of inferiority” Amrit Dhillon , Delhi Tuesday November 18 2025, 2.15pm GMT, The Times AWhig and an imperialist in equal measure, Thomas Babington Macaulay made his passage to India just as the great debate of the day was whether English should be the official language, or whether there was still a place for Hindi. What came in February of 1835, with Macaulay’s Minute on Indian Education, was a treatise that helped Britain impose western education standards, prioritised western literature and science over traditional Indian learning, and recommended English be used in classrooms, at all times, by Indian teachers and pupils. Macaulay’s aim was to create “a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals and in intellect”. He had little doubt he was doing the right thing, grandly claiming that “a single shelf of a good European library was worth the whole native literature of India and Arabia”. Yet 200 years on from Macaulay’s pronouncement, the matter is far from settled. Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, called on his country on Tuesday “to free ourselves from the mindset of slavery that Macaulay imposed on India”. In an impassioned speech for the Indian Express newspaper’s annual lecture, Modi set India a ten-year timeframe to rid the country of Macaulay’s legacy. Modi celebrating last week after his alliance secured a record-breaking win in the northern state of Bihar AP “I want to appeal to the entire country,” said Modi. “Over the next decade, we must resolve to free ourselves from the mindset of slavery that Macaulay imposed on India. The coming ten years are extremely important.” Modi said India had paid a heavy price for believing Macaulay instead of keeping faith in its own civilisation, claiming that the British baron “broke India’s self-confidence and instilled a sense of inferiority. In one stroke, he discarded thousands of years of India’s knowledge, science, art, culture and entire way of life.” He added that Macaulay had broken the “backbone of India’s education system”. Quote

Then first do these: 1. Scrap entire Railways and start using bullock carts. 2. Do not use English language. 3. Do not send Indians to work or study abroad Quote

Sounds good. Make it a more practical approach than just theory. Give some good training to Teachers. Ensure that teachers are hired after thorough scrutiny. Or have Intellectuals design the curriculum, and let these teachers teach them in schools. Most importantly, teach our ancient history and not just the Mughals. Teach Morals, cultivate an independent/confident mindset. Quote

UKs troubles after WW-2 are because of a totally different global set up that resulted after WW2. Why should King or Queen strip off their Crown? Their family was in rule since Norman Invasion in 1066. Indian Royal families took money from already struggling newly formed Indian Union for integrating their fiefdoms into Union. Indira Gandhi abolished Privy Purses in 1972 so Union stopped paying money to Hindu Royal families. Thats the difference. The British Royal family continued honouring Magna Carta, which gave voice to millions of people across the Globe to question the people in power. In Middle East even today and in pre-British India, people like Narendra Modi born into BC family would have never become PM Quote

Loot from India definitely helped the British but industrial revolution is not just because of the loot. Western European countries started exploring Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry & Biology) in a practical way from 16th Century. The inventions that came along helped not just British, but also Italy, Germany, Switzerland and every EU country. Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Nordic countries (Finland, Norway & Sweden) never had or had minimal Imperial desires.. . India was looted not by British alone, all the Hindu & Muslim Royal families abided by the Hindu upper castes all responsible. Quote

They gave due credit to everything they imported. We still have Indian, Pakistani, Persian, Chinese, Lebanese boards on hotels and restaurants. They give due respect to coffee, sugar and tea imports by labelling the source of origin. NB: Electricity, Telephone, Internet, AI all came from either Western Europe (in which UK was the leading force) or from America (which has also mostly British or Germany Geneology). Quote
