If a country is issuing work permits to foreign workers, shouldn’t it also make sure there’s a reasonable and functional visa process to go with it? If the real goal is to slow things down, reduce numbers, or quietly push people out, why not just say that upfront? Stop new H-1Bs and tell existing holders there won’t be extensions once their term ends. At least people can plan their lives. What’s frustrating is this in-between approach — endless delays, new hurdles, and uncertainty — without being honest about the intent.

As of January 26, 2026, U.S. consulates in India—including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata—have effectively exhausted regular H-1B visa interview slots for the remainder of 2026, with new dates now being pushed into April and May 2027.

This massive backlog has been driven by a combination of policy shifts and operational changes:
  • Mandatory Social Media Screening: Effective December 15, 2025, a new requirement for mandatory social media screening for all employment-based visa applicants has significantly increased the processing time per case.

Great news for India and Indians long term
