As of January 27, 2026, the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has officially concluded negotiations, but it is not yet in effect.
While a historic announcement was made today at the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi, the deal must still undergo several procedural steps before it becomes legally active.
Expected Effective Date
 * Target Implementation: Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated that the agreement is likely to be implemented within the 2026 calendar year.
 * Alternative Estimates: Some trade experts and officials suggest a more conservative timeline of early 2027, depending on the speed of the ratification process in the European Parliament and the Indian Cabinet.
Why is it not effective yet?
Before the deal becomes "active" (entry into force), it must clear the following hurdles:
 * Legal Scrubbing: A technical and legal review of the text by both sides to ensure language consistency, which is expected to take 5 to 6 months.
 * Formal Signing: Once the text is finalized, the two parties will formally sign the agreement, likely in late 2026.
 * Ratification: * EU Side: Requires consent from the European Parliament and a decision by the European Council.
   * India Side: Requires approval from the Union Cabinet.
Key Highlights of the Deal
Once effective, the agreement—dubbed the "mother of all deals"—will impact a market of 2 billion people:
 * Indian Exports: Over 99% of Indian goods will gain duty-free access to the EU immediately upon entry into force.
 * EU Exports: Tariffs will be reduced or removed on 96.6% of EU goods.
   * Cars: Tariffs will drop from 110% to as low as 10% over time.
   * Wines/Spirits: Duties will be cut from 150% to between 20% and 40%.
   * Agriculture: Tariffs on olive oil, chocolate, and processed foods will be eliminated.
