We used to live in Vanasthalipuram - a little distance away from HARINA VANASTHALI or "deer park" as it was locally called.

I absolutely loved going there as a kid and as an adult - as I am a big wild life enthusiast.

I really treasured this island of greenery in what then was considered the outskirts of the city. It had a small safari van to take you inside the protected forest and I loved watching various kinds of deer, wild boars, peacocks etc.

They even had a small theater to show some wild life documentaries.

All this to say - it proved a hit with the locals especially during summers because this deer park would prove to be  a welcome relief during hot summers.

Rumor or not back in the day - apparently an effort was made to convert this deer park into an airport and I remember being furious.

I hope this deer park still exists to this day. Other than providing much needed forest/ green cover for the city - it also provides yeoman service as an educational figurehead to school kids and really anyone who is interested in the environment.

Good to know that it exists. Sad to know it is run down.

Equally sad to know perhaps not many people realize the importance of conserving such a precious bit of forest embedded within an urban landscape.
