along with my son..two other kids took the exam all are desis...one ended up above 1500 and other one is 1200..

They will improve that’s ok. But good schools 1450 is min to be even considered

It’s okay anna.. every kid takes it at least 2-3 times.. everyone improves their score when they write the next time..

It’s a decent score. Depends on the school district. A good school with that score may not be enough. Also the clubs they are in and other activities will determine. 
But more importantly every school will have a different criteria to enroll. 
1350-1500 with the criteria that matches the university will get in. We never know about their criteria.

BTW California do not need a SAT score to get into UCs. Desi kids are not taking SATs these days. 

1350 is low. The score should tell which section(s) needs improvement. 1-2 months focused study should help above 1450. 

As for college admissions, it is very holistic.  You cannot tell if you have high score, you will get in or if you have low score you can't get in. 

They check 

• GPA
• AP's
• SAT/ACT score
• EC
• Essays

So, if one area is lacking, other areas should cover it. 

Have some state schools are targets/safeties and others which are high ranking as target/reach.  

State schools also check how the high school is doing. If average SAT score is high in your kids high school, he will be measured against that.
