Recently she said YS was insulting womenfolk by throwing flying kisses in his meetings. If it is insulting, I do not understand why womenfolk alone are insulted. Does Roja mean menfolk enjoy receiving kisses from a fellow-man? Are we gay? Roja must be thinking that YS is making amorous overtures to women thru these kisses and she took offence. For that matter, Roja too tried entice audience on screen in several films. You might argue that she was pursuing her screen-lover. In that case, she must be looking into his eyes and muttering sweet nothings rather than gyrating in front of camera for the benefit of audience. Film audience consists of both male and female. I do not think women in the theatre were thrilled by her seductive movements even if they were aimed at them. So 50% of the effort is lost. Even among men-folk, probably half of them liked them and remaining half just ignored. So she must be attempting to lure only 25% of the audience. Still as a performing artiste, she made an effort. The point to be noted here is that 75% of the audience did not express objection for her vigorous thrusts to camera. They were not offended, so to say. They have just put up with it. Despite knowing the tolerance level of general public, Roja is worried that what womenfolk would think of YS’s flying kisses. Surprisingly Roja did not find anything awkward in slapping one’s thighs. When Duryodhana did it inviting Draupadi to his lap, it had enraged her husband Bhima. He vowed to break Duryodhana’s thighs and ultimately he did. Even in modern times, I wonder how many women like a man to slap his thighs in front of her. As far as men concerned, this act of offence indicates a challenge other person is throwing to show his fighting spirit. It is definitely not a sign of showing love and affection towards fellow human-beings. And tell me how many men like that tone. Probably Roja thinks that her party leaders slap their thighs for the benefit of their faraway adversaries but not for the audience in front of them. She could have extended the same logic for YS’s kisses. YS must be throwing kisses for his wife or girl-friends and why should we bother about them? If we are in audience we just ignore them. For that matter, all these political leaders join their palms to do ‘namaste’ and display victory signal by putting up two fingers. If I were in audience, I never felt they are meant for me. I cannot make out whether ‘victory’ is for me or for the leader. These days it has become a trend for leaders to raise their hands and join with each others. I frankly do not know what they mean by this act. By displaying their sweat-soaked shirt under arms, they might be conveying that they are sweating it out to forge alliance among them. But I am not sure. I just ignore all these messages. When NTR was showering love and affection on Laxmi Parwati publicly on election platforms in 1994, I just ignored it. I thought the man was newly married and has to be given some concession for dancing with his wife whenever time permitted. But Roja seems to be impatient and intolerant. She feels bad whenever YS throws kisses. If you ask me personally, I too do not relish it. I do not like people slapping thighs or hurling abuses in public. But I am helpless. In YS’s case, I draw solace that there is sea change in YS’s attitude. Remember, YS grew up in faction politics. His father was killed due to factionism politics of Seema. His elder brother was killed in student politics. YS, himself used to be an angry young man. Only recently, his anger-nerve is snapped, he claimed. With this kind of background, YS has every right to twist moustache and howl. He has graduated from throwing chappals to throwing kisses. And I appreciate him for the transformation.
