Cheddi Chinnodu Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 [size=12pt]The US success in eliminating Osama bin Laden, thousands of kilometers from its shore, has raised questions about India’s inability to destroy 50-odd terror camps operating in PoK or eliminating Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, who is roaming freely in the neighborhood.Apart from diplomatic requests, the Indian Government has not shown any resolve to secure even the custody of Saeed. New Delhi has mostly relied on petitioning the USA and Western powers to put pressure on Pakistan to deliver India’s most wanted terrorists.As the news about Osama’s killing came in, reactions started pouring in on cyber world, expressing anger and despair over the country’s helplessness in dealing more firmly with the terrorists sheltered across the border.While most experts felt that India lacks the will to take any independent decision to go for ‘hot pursuit” in PoK, IAF chief PV Naik asserted that the country has the capabilities to carry out surgical strikes. But he refused to elaborate when asked if India had the wherewithal to carry out a US-like operation. While the decision to carry out a surgical strike has to be taken by the political leadership, the issue has come up time and again.There was intense debate about using India’s military power to destroy the terror infrastructure in Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.The military leadership gave detailed presentations to the political leadership at that point of time and expressed the capability to take on the mission. However, the Government baulked from giving the go-ahead under intense US pressure. Similarly, India was forced to hold its forces after massive mobilisation as part of Operation Parakram after terrorists attacked Parliament in 2001. The armed forces at that point of time wanted to take out terrorist training camps in PoK and destroy war fighting capabilities of Pakistan in the mountains.However, the then US Defence Secretary Donalad Rumsfeld and Foreign Secretary Condoleezza Rice rushed to New Delhi to urge India not to take military action against Pakistan. The US pressure worked, besides India getting wary of possibility of Pakistan using nuclear weapons.India has one of most experienced and battle-hardened Special Forces to take on such surgical strikes and strategic missions. The Special Forces, including the Marine Commandos (MARCOS) of the Navy have proven their worth time and again.In fact, the first few batches of the MARCOS were trained by the US Navy SEALS who carried out Laden strike. Our Special Forces have one of the best commandos in the world and the Government has given the sanction to raise five more battalions besides the present five battalions.They are trained to undertake missions behind the enemy lines and conduct surgical strikes backed by air power. The IAF also has improved its lethality and capabilities to undertake such missions by deploying attack helicopters and fighter jets. [/size]
