Defending the Congress party’s stand on the issue of separate Telangana state, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas Reddy said the Chief Minister had made it very clear that the party was in favour of a separate Telangana. “There is no doubt or hesitation on the separate statehood issue,” he said adding that the party was earnestly working towards carving out a separate Telangana state.

The PCC President however shared that he was not satisfied with the allocation of Assembly tickets to backward class communities but factors like delimitation prevented the party from fielding more backward community leaders in the poll fray. “We have increased seats for BC’s up to 70 but it could have been around 80. By and large, the Congress party had allocated 50 per cent seats to the weaker sections,” he said.

He shrugged away the comments made by the opposition parties over seat allocation to backward communities saying that you cannot replace the existing leaders in the name of social justice. “Whatever the comments made by the opposition, the ultimate factor is the winning choice,” he said.

Making light of the incidents of dissidence in the party, D Srinivas exuded confidence that the party would win more seats than the last time in 2004. “When compared with opposition parties, the dissidence in the Congress is less. The party has its own organisational system and strategy and all problems will be sorted out before polling,” he said adding that the poll promises made by the Telugu Desam and Praja Rajyam would not have any impact.

“They are giving unproductive promises such as color TVs and cash transfer schemes,” he said. “But, the Congress government had shown its commitment to people’s welfare through its development programmes. We have credibility among the people and this would definitely help us to retain power,” he said.

The PCC chief was also confident that he would seal a thumping victory in Nizamabad and promised to turn it into a model city.
