A court in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has remanded MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in custody for two weeks.
Mr Reddy was arrested on Sunday night on charges of corruption and produced in Nampally court on Monday.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged him with "criminal conspiracy, cheating and falsification of accounts". He denies all charges.
Mr Reddy is the son of YSR Reddy, the charismatic former state chief minister who died in a helicopter crash in 2009.
Both the father and the son were members of India's governing Congress party.
But after his father's death, the Congress ignored his bid for the chief minister's post and he quit accusing the party of humiliating him and his family.
Later, he launched his own party, YSR Congress.
Mr Reddy's party has called a state-wide shutdown in Andhra Pradesh on Monday and security is tight across the state.
On Monday, the CBI lawyers told the court that Mr Reddy did not cooperate during his interrogation.
They argued that if he remained free, Mr Reddy could influence witnesses and tamper with the evidence.
The court has sent him to jail till 11 June.
