trust_212 Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 I had credit cards of 24k most of them being Citi Cards...In 2008 august, my debt on credit cards was 18k and i always made prompt payments. After August, due to recession i was unable to pay the minimum payments as they were around 700$ including all cards and it was highly impossible for me to even make min payments without a job for almost 9-10 months. i tried to negotiate with them and explained my situation that i am jobless and asked them to reduce min balances or freeze the cards for 2 yrs but they were not helpful and unable to make payments i stopped making payments and after 3-4 months i guess they closed all my cards and sent them to collections. I used to literally get 30-40 calls and some agents used to even threaten me saying they will file a legal case if unpaid and used to give me a dead line...Initially i was totally scared and pressurized but my uncle told me that they cannot harass me like that and i don't need to shiver with fear about cases and stuff and that it wouldn't affect in any way legally as they cannot do anything...i still get calls like in 2008 but with time 40 calls per day have decreased to one or two calls per day. After i got the job i lifted calls from collection agents and tried to negotiate but they have put so much interest on them since then that the loan amount have now become thrice or even more and they said they can waive interest if i pay almost like 26k in 15 days dead line time...i told them that it is impossible that i can do it and asked them about the monthly installments and said i will be able to pay 500$ per month on that 26 k loan but they said i have to pay around 40k if i opt for installments and unable to pay and without enough knowledge on how to deal i just kept quiet...i get collections mails too but always ignored...this topic always scares me to death but i avoid thinking just to escape from pressure. Though i tried to talk to debt lawyer i read online that it is better to not repay collection accounts as that would further cause damage to my credit history..my credit history is worst that i bought car for 16.78% last year..my main problem now is [b]unexpectedly today few hrs back a collections agent went to my past address and talked to my roommate. As she knows about this situation she managed and told him that she doesn't know me and didn't give her info as well to him as they even call 40 times a day...he didnt leave her place without her info saying that he has to inform whom he talked to with his lawyer..i am really scared now if that is a legal case...i never knew that collection agents even come to residences. I am still in canada as i came for stamping and now even scared if i will be stopped at port of entry...Can anyone help me to deal with this situation?? Any advices?[/b]
