US lawmakers decided not to vote in favour of the STEM Job Act that would have granted permanent resident visas to foreign graduates of American universities in the science and technology fields this Thursday September 20th, 2012.

The vote on the bill was called under the provision that allows only limited discussion on the bill; however, the bill must get two third votes in favour for approval. The bill received 257 votes in favour which were short of the two third majority it required to pass.

Republican Rep. Lamar Smith, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced the STEM Jobs Act which was subject to intense criticism from the Democrats due to a certain provision it contained. The bill specified that the category of ‘diversity visas’ be eliminated and in its place a special visa category for STEM certified students be created.
