Guys,

I have one doubt... Do we need archive logs to restore database to very older point?

Scenario is: I need to restore my database to Nov 29th 2012, I have Nov 29th 2012 backup piece. is it possible?

it all depends on what type of backups your are running level 0 or level 1 or full database backups

backups are going to tapes or disks,what is the retention policy ?

if the backups are too old and they are on the disks you can restore them by cataloging the backup pieces.you can do a restore if the backup's are level 0.

If you had level 0 and level 1,to the day and time to restore the database, you are good to restore.If you have full database backup and any of the archive log is missing you can't restore the database.

to check the level 0,level 1 or F

RMAN> list backup of database summary;

list backup of database device type 'sbt_tape' completed between "to_date('2003 mar 21 11:00','yyyy mon dd hh24:mi')" and "to_date('2003 may 25 18:00','yyyy mon dd hh24:mi')";

LIST backup of database device type 'sbt_tape' completed after "to_date('03/21/2013','mm/dd/yyyy')";

[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)] run {[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]2> restore database preview;[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]3> }[/background]

[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)] set echo on[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]spool log to prev.out[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]run[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]{[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]set until time "to_date('Nov 29 2012 23:00:00', 'Mon dd yyyy HH24:MI:SS')";[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]restore database preview;[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]}[/background]
[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]spool log off[/background]

[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]i don't think you can use the above command because retention period will be more 3 months but still depends on your management.[/background]

plan properly before you do a restore,it's very important.

find out what type of a database it is level 0 or level 1 or Full,then verify the backup piece whether it can be used to restore the database.
