Mithrudu is a film about a lonely young man who is forced into marriage by a pretty girl. What is the motive of the girl in forcing the hero to marry her and can she succeed in her mission? This is broadly the storyline of the new Balayya film. 

Story:

Sandhya (Priyamani) is the only daughter of a rich industrialist Ranaganath. She goes to Malaysia to do her MBA. She learns through an astrologer in Tanjavur that there is a flaw in her horoscope. Whoever she marries will die within 30 days of the marriage. The astrologer asks Priyamani to select a person who has a horoscope with certain planetary placements that match with her horoscope.

Sandhya starts looking for such a guy. She finds him in Adithya (Balakrishna). The problem is that Adithya plays hard to get. He is seen drinking all the time and likes to live all alone. But Sandhya finally manages to convince him to marry her. She is assisted in this by a well wisher Krishna Bhagavan. Meanwhile Pradeep Rawat’s son is keen to marry Sandhya and lands in Malayisia.

Ranaganath also sends his brother-in-law Brahmanandam to bring Sandhya back home. Priyamani marries Adithya and is now happy as he will die within one month and then she can marry her friend Madhu (Deepak) who is seen as a great social worker who always thinks of the poor orphans. He also gains sympathy by walking with the help of a stick. He is supposed to have fractured his leg while trying to save a poor girl from coming under a car. 

After the marriage the scene shifts to India with Sandhya, Adithya and Madhu coming home. The real drama starts now with Madhu showing his real cunning mind of trying to grab the property of Indu in the guise of love.

How Adithya foils the plan of Madhu and how he escapes from death that was fated in his horoscope is the remaining part of the story. Along the way we also learn about the background of Adithya and how he was orphaned.

Performance:                                                                                                   

Balakrishna is portrayed in a completely different way in the film. He gets a new style and the director has made efforts to portray him as an angry young hero. While Balayya carries his role with conviction, age slows him down considerably. The closes up scenes in particular, reveal the wrinkles on his face and the gaudy makeup hits you in the face literally. However Balayya treats his fans to some good songs and dance scenes and of course fights that have become his trademark in recent times.

Priyamani fits the bill of a chirpy young teenager who will also go to any length to get what she wants. She is sexy and sensuous and does justice to her role. Deepak plays a negative character and he carries it with the required finesse.

Ranganath, Pradeep Rawat, Chandramohan, Chalapathirao, Hema and others are adequate in their roles. Brahmanandam and Raghubabu try their hand at comedy and succeed only partly. Krishna Bhagawan plays a serious role for a change.

Mani Sarma’s music is good in parts. A few dialogues manage do make an impact – one dialogue goes like this ‘Ranganath to Pradeep Rawat – “Pandi entha Balisina Enugu Kaaledu”. Another dialogue between Brhmanadam and Blayya goes like this – Brahmy asks “Meeru emi chestoontru saar”? Balayya replies ‘Chaavu kosam eduru choosthu vuntaanu”.

The storyline is weak and the screenplay is also not perfect. The film also runs close to 2 hours 45 minutes and the audience start losing interest. 

Director Mahadev begins well but somewhere along the line he loses the grip over the film. The inclusion of heavy dose of family drama and sentiment before the climax drags the film a lot. As a result, the film ends on a rather tame and predictable note.
