A school of thought believes his mother conspired to have him killed as he was against a number of affairs she was having with ministers from her govenrment - he slapped her one evening and she had him killed the next.

His mother Mrs. Gandhi's plane was rigged and she survived as it was detected. Later she was killed by her own body guards. Rajiv Gandhi was also assassinated. his wife Sonia, although won the leadership did not take up prime ministership.
