moviecafe Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 The box office records are meant to be broken in every film industry. Telugu Cinema is no different. The only question is ‘how soon’ a record can be broken. Over the past ten years, lots of things have changed. Primarily, blockbusters hits have started to rake in moolah which had never been heard before. Expansions of markets, better marketing, unprecedented hype and pre-release buzz have been some of the main factors behind the success of films apart from the content. According to a survey done by ‘India Today’ magazine (Telugu editon: dated- March 30th, 2010), these are the biggest blockbusters in the history of Telugu Cinema FilmsGross CollectionsMagadheera (2009) Rs.90 croresPokiri (2006) Rs. 60 croresArundhati (2009) Rs.56 croresYamadonga (2007) Rs.46 croresIndra (2002) Rs.40 croresSimhadri (2003) Rs.38 croresNarasimha Naidu(2001) Rs.35 croresOut of the seven blockbusters, S.S.Rajamouli has three, Magadheera, Yamadonga and Simhadri, to his credit. B.Gopal has two, Indra and Narasimha Naidu to his credit. Puri Jagannadh and Kodi Ramakrishna have one each to their credit. Another interesting aspect worth noticing is, except for Magadheera and Arundhati, all others films had stars like Mahesh Babu, Chiranjeevi, Jr.NTR and Balakrishna who were at their prime when they did these films. ‘Magadheera’ is in a league apart. It had an ace director, S S Rajamouli and Ram Charan Teja had just made his debut with ‘Chirutha’ before he acted in this film. The success of this film is still an enigma. It had some explosive action sequences and was a technical wonder. More than these aspects, it left the audience in a state of euphoria which forced them to watch the film again and again. On the other hand, ‘Arundhati’ deserves a special mention. Among these seven box office hits, it’s the only heroine-oriented film. Directed by Kodi Ramakrishna, the film had Anushka in lead role. Both Shyam Prasad Reddy, who produced the film and Rahul Nambiar were the architects of the splendid visual effects in the film. It gave a new lease of life to ‘heroine-oriented’ films in Telugu; however, none of them could repeat the magic of ‘Arundhati’.These box office records and the films associated with it, clearly show that ‘Action’ films have been the biggest crowd pullers. Apart from action, these films had good onscreen chemistry between hero and heroines, good music, comedy and boast of great entertainment value. Now, that’s what we call a ‘superhit formula’ for a blockbuster! Quote
