Curbs on movement of autos on the beach road. According to Arunabh Chatterjee, a tourist from Kolkata, the new development has put him into a lot of inconvenience.

The most frequented tourist destination in the city is the Ramakrishna Beach that stretches over a length of five km from the Naval Coast Battery to the VUDA Park. Even the locals flock to the stretch to chill out with family and friends on weekends.

But a recent move by the traffic cops has put both tourists and locals to a lot of discomfort. The police have banned the entry of autorickshaws onto the Beach Road from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

RK Beach has many spots such as the Gokul Park, Kali Temple and Children’s Park and a number of eateries spread across the 5-km stretch. According to Arunabh Chatterjee, a tourist from Kolkata, the new development has put him into a lot of inconvenience. “Last time when I visited the city about three years ago, we engaged an auto and visited each of the spots. But this time it was a sweaty experience, as we had to walk almost the entire stretch,” he said.

But the police have their own version.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) K. Mahendra Patrudu, the reason from banning the autos on weekends was due to the indisciplined driving of the autos.

“On weekends, the rush is heavy and on top of that the auto drivers do not adhere to the parking norms and stop their vehicles according to their whims and fancy. To curb this menace we have banned the plying of autos on weekends,” he said.

Mr. Patrudu informed The Hindu that autos were being allowed up to 50 metres before the Beach Road and were being allowed to ply on the parallel intersecting roads. “Yes there are a few spots where the distance may be a bit longer and people may have to walk a bit. But the idea is to create a better ambience. Moreover, we are allowing autos carrying travellers with luggage, sick or old people,” said the ADCP.

D. Srinivas Rao who lives on the Beach Road, however, feels that authorities should maintain a pool of autos to ferry people across the stretch.

Tourist potential waiting to be tapped

Vizag Development Council comes up with a list of suggestions to make city one of the favourite destinations in the country. The other suggestions include preserving and promoting the historic sites such as ‘Erramatti Dibbalu’ and Borra Caves, introduction of glass coaches on the train to Araku.

“The highest revenue earner for the AP Tourism Department is the Visakhapatnam region,” said a tourism official a couple of months ago.

The famous temple of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Nrusimha Swamy at Simhachalam, Araku, Borra Caves, Buddhist heritage sites dotting the city and district, ‘Erramatti Dibbalu’, the beaches in the city and at Bheemunipatnam, and Kailasagiri draw tourists not only from various parts of Andhra Pradesh but also from other states as also abroad.

The new State of Andhra Pradesh offers a huge potential to become a tourist hotspot of India considering its vast coastline.

Visakhapatnam can be developed into one of the favourite tourist destinations of India considering its immense tourist potential, says Vizag Development Council (VDC) vice-president O. Naresh Kumar. The VDC has suggested setting up of a science museum, planetarium and observatory in the city, and development of golf courses. It has also suggested promotion of zoo, aquariums, and underwater rides, and beach tourism. These apart, it has favoured development of a network connecting Buddhist heritage sites and improvement of essential facilities at all pilgrims centres across Andhra Pradesh.

The other suggestions include preserving and promoting the historic sites such as ‘Erramatti Dibbalu’ and Borra Caves, introduction of glass coaches on the train to Araku, a ‘Palace on Wheels’ to connect important tourists spots of Andhra Pradesh, and development of sports tourism yachting for which beaches of Visakhapatnam are said to be comparable to the best in the world. The VDC has appealed to the government to set up Visakhapatnam Tourism Board, improve air connectivity, develop world-class infrastructure at Visakhapatnam International Airport, and commission tourism projects on the Visakhapatnam – Bheemunipatnam mega beach corridor that was announced in the past.

Sikhs distribute chilled rose milk and ‘chana’ to passers-by to mark the 408 anniversary of martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev. The 5th Guru, who preached humanity love and equality, was tortured to death when he refused to marry the daughter of the then Mughal emperor.

On Sunday morning, the otherwise busy junction at Gurudwara came to a halt as the young and old volunteers worked in tandem to serve chilled rose milk in glasses and ‘chana’ in cups to the passers-by.

As a group of elderly women sat in a circle to wash the tall glasses, another group of volunteers helped in filling the glasses with ladles of rose milk.

Once it was done, the youngsters came forward to serve the thirst quenchers to the people. Providing the much-needed respite from sultry weather, the volunteers distributed as many as 40,000 glasses of rose milk.

Marking the 408 anniversary of martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev, scores of Sikhs came together to observe the occasion at Gurudwara Sadh Sangat.

The 5th Guru, who preached humanity love and equality, was tortured to death when he refused to marry the daughter of the then Mughal emperor.

Guru Arjan Dev was made to sit over burning coals until he was tortured to death.

“By serving chilled drinks, the faithful aimed at bringing down the fierce flames of the fireplace where the Guru was made to sit over,” Balvinder Singh, secretary of Gurudwara Sadh Sangat, said.

‘Kitans’, 48-hour ‘akhandpath’ followed by a three-day ‘langar’ formed part of the occasion. The community has been following the custom of distributing chilled drinks for several decades now.

“Every year, we make sure to participate in the event. This not only helps us bring a smile on many faces, but also seek our Guru’s blessings,” Harmanjeet Kaur, one of the volunteers, said.

Airport registers highest revenue growth

ON_SOUND_LINES_eps_1924905e.jpg

It earns Rs. 33.15 crore despite marginal drop in passengers. The passenger traffic from 2006-07 to 2012-13 registered a steady increase in all the years and it crossed the 10-lakh mark during 2012-13.

A revenue growth of Rs.2.96 crore was achieved by the Visakhapatnam International Airport during 2013-14 compared to the previous year, notwithstanding a marginal drop in passengers.

The total revenue (both traffic and non-traffic) of Rs.33.15 crore this year is the highest during the last five years and represents a growth of Rs. 20.96 crore this year compared to 2009-10.

This is despite the drop in aircraft movement from 15,491 during 2012-13 to 11,266 during 2013-14.

Assistant General Manager (Finance) G. Madhusudhana Rao attributes the growth in revenue despite the reduction in aircraft movement to the introduction of large bodied aircraft like Boeings, in place of ATRs, which are about half the size of bigger aircraft.

The traffic revenue, which was Rs 23.75 crore in 2012-13, increased to Rs. 25.28 crore during the next year, registering a growth of Rs.1.53 crore and the non-traffic revenue (commercial) increased from Rs.6.44 crore to Rs.7.87 crore during the same period, registering an increase of Rs.1.43 crore.

Similarly, the total revenue increased from Rs.30.19 crore to Rs.33.15 crore during the same period.

The total number of passengers, both domestic and international, registered a marginal decrease from 10,38,958 in 2012-13 to 10,13,689 during 2013-14.

Stir impact

The two-month agitation to protest against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh had an impact on the movement of passengers.

Steady increase

The passenger traffic from 2006-07 to 2012-13 registered a steady increase in all the years and it crossed the 10-lakh mark during 2012-13. The aircraft movement from the airport registered a steady increase from 2006-07 to 2008-09 but declined in 2009-10, perhaps due to the global recession. It picked up marginally in 2010-11 and sharply in 2011-12.

Thereafter, it declined marginally in 2012-13 and steeply in 2013-14.

This is due to the introduction of large bodied aircraft that can carry a number of passengers.

The industry, air travellers, and exporters are upbeat on the prospects of airport and expect an impetus to the growth of traffic and introduction of more domestic and international flights in view of the appointment of Vizianagaram MP Ashok Gajapathi Raju as Union Minister for Civil Aviation.
