ARYA Posted June 6, 2014 Report Posted June 6, 2014 Congress delegation meets Railway Minister A delegation of Congress leaders led by Rajya Sabha Member T. Subbarami Reddy met Railway Minister Sadanand Gowda in New Delhi on Thursday and appealed to him to consider Visakhapatnam as headquarters of the proposed South Coast Railway Zone. Rajya Sabha Members K. Chiranjeevi, Jairam Ramesh, JD Seelam and AP Congress Committee president N. Raghuveera Reddy were in the delegation which met the Railway Minister and impressed upon him on the need to select Visakhapatnam as headquarters of the new zone, which was announced by the UPA at the time of the AP Reorganisation Bill. Mr. Sadanand Gowda agreed to consider the request as Visakhapatnam had many features to fulfil the requirements to establish the zonal headquarters, according to a statement issued by Mr. Subbarami Reddy here. Mr. Reddy also met the Chairman of the Railway Board Arunendra Kumar and appealed to him to consider Visakhapatnam as headquarters of the new railway zone, which was promised for the new state in the AP Reorganisation Bill. Mr. Kumar agreed to place the request before the Railway Minister and pursue the same.

Going by any parameter, be it freight traffic, revenue, availability of railway land and railway assets, the presence of two ports, Visakhapatnam has an edge over Vijayawada and Guntur, which are also being considered for location of the headquarters. This was the consensus that emerged at a meeting of the Railway Zone Sadhana Samithi here on Thursday. “There is no justification for setting up of the headquarters in Vijayawada on the plea of its central location. The common people have nothing to do with the headquarters. Huge demand On the other hand, the huge demand for allocation of railway wagons by the Ports and other industries, located in Visakhapatnam, can be met easily by the headquarters,” Samithi convener and CPI State assistant secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy told the media after the meeting. Mr. Murthy said that Visakhapatnam has all the required facilities like Diesel Loco Shed, Electric Loco Shed and more importantly, a modern Coaching Complex to take care of the maintenance of coaches. BJP City president P.V. Narayana Rao said that the BJP manifesto has clearly stated that the party stood for decentralised development and prevent recurrence of the mistake of concentrating development in one place as in the case of Hyderabad. He said that any attempt to continue Waltair Division in East Coast Railway (ECoR) or depriving it from getting the zone headquarters would be resisted. He said that the samithi leaders would meet the Prime Minister, Railway Minister and the Chief Minister-designate N. Chandrababu Naidu in this regard. BJP leader M. Nagendra, Lok Satta leader Venugopala Rao, Telugu Desam leader Prasadula Srinivas and Marxist Communist Party of India (Unity) representative G.V.M.
