ARYA Posted September 15, 2014 Report Posted September 15, 2014 Good Samaritans lay road near Duvvada railway station DC CORRESPONDENT | September 15, 2014, 06.09 am IST inShare Printer-friendly version Send by email Volunteers of SVS Seva Samiti clean the premises as they render social service near Duvvada railway station Visakhapatnam: Being a responsible citizen was taken to another level by members of a non-profit organisation as they finished a task on Sunday which they had undertaken a few days back for the public good. Members of SVS Seva Samiti had received a request from auto drivers who conduct their business at Duvvada railway station about the sad state of affairs near the station wherein a big pit on the road was obstructing traffic flow and creating jams. About 75 members of the organisation got involved in the task of filling up the dug up spot. It took about five days of toil, a road-roller, loads of mud and gravel which were transported through four lorries to get the task done, said B. Veerabhadra Rao, managing trustee of the organisation. The pit was covered with gravel, covered with mud and then leveled using the road-roller. Now, the leveled area is being used for parking of buses and autos resulting in better flow of traffic. Mr Rao said that the organisation also takes care of a few basic amenities at the Duvvada railway station. Secretary of the organisation K.L. Gandhi said, “Duvvada railway station is witnessing increasing traffic as many people who live on the city outskirts get down at this station rather than at Vizag station. The dug up pit was creating hurdles for traffic as the road beside it is already narrow and traffic snarls were becoming unbearable. We are happy we could do our bit for the society.”and ease out the traffic flow a little.”
ARYA Posted September 15, 2014 Report Posted September 15, 2014 Andhra Pradesh misses ‘big’ smart city mark Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has started lobbying to get as many 14 smart cities in the state. Hyderabad: None of cities in Andhra Pradesh qualify to be a ‘smart city’ in the 40-lakh population category. However, AP is seeking to create 14 smart cities in the “less than 40 lakh population cities” category. Although there are only 13 districts in AP, there are two towns in some districts like Chittoor and Tirupati, Rajahmundry and Kakinada, and Eluru and Bhimavaram which can qualify to be selected under the “smart city” scheme in the “less than 10 lakh population cities” category. The Central government is yet to finalise the number of town and cities in Andhra Pradesh that would be selected for the smart cities scheme, but Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has started lobbying to get as many 14 smart cities in the state. Municipal and urban development minister Dr P. Narayana confirmed that only Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada qualify in the smart city category having 10-40 lakh population. The remaining towns and cities like Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool, Chittoor, Tirupati, Rajahmundry, Kadapa, Kakinada, Eluru, Bhimavaram, Anantapur, Vizianagaram, Ongole, Nandyal, Adoni, Tenali, Proddatur, Madanapalle, Srikakulam, Narsaraopet and Tadepalligudem are in the race for smart cities in the under 10 lakh population category. The Central government convened a meeting of all state urban development ministers in Delhi to explain the concept and seek suggestions. There will be a few more rounds of meetings before cities from various states are selected for implementation of the smart city scheme. “Andhra Pradesh is seeking 14 smart cities citing the injustice done to it during bifurcation of the state,” said Mr Narayana. Explaining the concept of a smart city, the AP minister said the focus will be on physical, social and institutional infrastructure. Under physical infrastructure, the components covered are power and water supply, solid waste management, sewerage, multimodal transport, cyber connection, roads railways airports connectivity, housing and disaster management. Social infrastructure covers components like education, healthcare, entertainment (parks & greens, music, culture and heritage, sports, tourist spots), inclusive planning (SC/ST, Backward incentives) etc.
