Panel to select site for IIM

Visakhapatnam: A high-level panel headed by union HRD ministry’s joint secretary, Praveen Prakash would be visiting Vizag on Friday to select suitable land for the establishment of IIM, as promised by the Centre during state bifurcation.

The panel will also look into the facilities available here and also feasibility to begin IIM classes at a temporary accommodation from the next academic year onwards.

District authorities have already identified around three land sites of 150 acres each for the panel to visit and decide.

Sites that are suitable for setting up the prestigious institution were identified at Purushottapuram, Gambheeram and Chinamushidiwada all in 30 kms radius of the city.

IIM is one among the 11 prestigious national repute institutions the Centre promised to establish in Andhra Pradesh as part of bifurcation deal.

The panel visit comes at a time when locals have been demanding for an IIT instead of IIM. They are of the opinion that a technical institution of such a high repute will help the industry in and around Vizag.

Wipro mulls new SEZ in Visakhapatnam; BoA meeting tomorrow to consider proposals

CHENNAI: Enthused by the promise made by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu of an investor-friendly regime in AP, technology titan Wipro is expanding its Vizag campus. The company has sought the nod from the Union commerce ministry for setting up a new special economic zone (SEZ) in AP.

As per company filings with the commerce ministry, Wipro holds 1.22 hectares in Resapuvanipalem in Visakhapatnam and wants to set up an SEZ in the land. Wipro chairman Azim Premji and AP chief minister Chandrababu Naidu met in July. It is learnt that during this meeting, Naidu and Premji hammered out several issues which paved the way for this application to the Union commerce ministry.

The board of advisors at the commerce ministry are meeting on Thursday to consider Wipro's proposal amongst others. Once operational, in phases, the facility would house more than 6,400 software professionals.

A high level delegation led by AP IT minister Raghunatha Reddy and senior officials organized a road show in Chennai last Sunday to showcase the "immense business opportunities" the state offers for IT investments.

The AP state government brought out three key policies: IT, Electronics, Innovation & Start-Up Policy 2014-2020.

The policies target to create a world class ecosystem conducive for entrepreneurship and has undertaken initiatives to facilitate investments and improve the ease of doing business in AP.

AP is projecting Vizag, Tirupati and Vijayawada as destinations for creating the IT eco-system. The immediate challenge is to create tech corridors and create the physical infrastructure. Then follow it up with social infrastsructure.

Visakhapatnam to get Rs 30k-cr port project

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) and Gangavaram Port are likely to face competition as a project to set up a third port is on the anvil in Visakhapatnam district. According to industry sources, KSR Maritime Projects is looking at establishing a port capable of handling around 100 million tonnes of cargo around Nakkapalle area at an estimated investment of nearly Rs 30,000 crore.

The port project is expected to be developed in four phases, as per the documents submitted to the ministry of environment and forests.

The prefeasibility report states that the port will be designed to handle around 60 million tonnes of cargo per annum in about six years from the commencement of the project, which would later be expanded to handle around 100 million tonnes.

Confirming to TOI, chief executive officer of KSR Maritime Projects K Subba Reddy said, "We have asked the state government to provide land for the project. The port project spread over an area of around 3,500 acres will lead to an investment of around Rs 29,750 crore."

He said, "In addition to berths to handle cargo, the focus will also be on setting up of a shipyard and ship repair centre plus a fishing harbour."

The project plan includes a fishery terminal for all fishing related operations, bulk cargo terminal essentially designed for bulk cargo operations, container terminal for container cargo and also for petrochemical product vessels, Ro-Ro (roll on-roll off) and coastal terminal essentially designed for operation of Ro-Ro vessels. The coastal terminal will also include a trestle, which allows cargo handling operations in open sea conditions at a depth of 20 metres.

The coastal and offshore infrastructure of the port includes not only the offshore infrastructure, but also land-based facilities of warehousing, fishing harbour infrastructure, and seafront-based industrial activity among others.

The port project also includes plans of an integrated storage facility comprising transit and storage sheds, warehouses, tankage systems, container park and cold storages.

The project will have connectivity through Chennai-Vizag-Howrah rail corridor.

Industry sources pointed out that with the petroleum, chemical and petrochemical investment region expected to come up along Vizag-Kakinada region and plans to develop Vizag-Chennai industrial corridor, development of another port in next four to six years could augur well for the region.

"If the state government manages to establish electronic manufacturing clusters and get investments for the PCPIR, a port around Nakkapalle area would prove to be really beneficial for industries located in those clusters," said a shipping industry source.

AP CM to inaugurate IT incubation centre in Vizag on Sept 29

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT 17:

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate the IT incubation centre at Rushikonda here on September 29 and on the same day a major seminar on IT development will also be held, according to State HRD Minister G. Srinivasa Rao.

He said here on Wednesday that an IT start-up centre would also be inaugurated. He said the Government was keen on removing the hurdles to the growth of the IT industry in the State and the academic institutions in the State would also take all steps to turn out the suitable personnel for the industry.

There would be interaction between the educational institutions and the IT industry. The Government would play the role of a facilitator, he added.

He said several industries would be set up in the vicinity of Visakhapatnam and the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) chairman would visit the city on September 21 and hold a review meeting here.

He would review how much land had been allocated to each industry such as Brandix and the promised jobs. It would be reviewed whether the industry had fulfilled the job obligation and what steps should be taken in case the industry failed to do so, he said.

If there were any genuine problems holding up the growth of the industry, they would be addressed but it would not be allowed to hold onto the piece of land given to it without generating any economic activity, he said.

He said a skill development centre would also be set up here with the assistance of the local industries. The AP Government was taking steps to supply power 24 hours a day to all the industries.

The State Govt. had also allocated land to the NTPC at Pudimadaka village in Visakhapatnam district to set up a power plant with a capacity of 4,000 MWs.

Arya, just finished watching the new pics you added. As always, a  note of thanks to you buddy

Telugu_Nadu, great updates for Vizag.

A am not in favor of a third port coming up in Vizag. 2 existing ports if operated efficiently should be sufficient.

As for the IIT vs IIM in Vizag, i think any institute is good for the city. City lo oka premium institute ostundhi anthein, it's good.

Welcome and I agree with you on this. 2 ports are already there and having 3rd port will make the existing ports cautious with expansion plans. First and foremost target is to make sure current ports continue with expansion plan and trade grows from them.

There is also a part in Kakinada and 2nd one for Hardware import/export is being planned by GMR. Then, we have Machilipatnam revival and then Krishnapatnam, and Dugarajapatnam.

I want to see AP fully utilising the following ports:

Kalingapatnam

Visakhapatnam

Gangavaram

Kakinada

Machilipatnam

Krishnapatnam

After bifurcation, Andhra cities are getting more attention. Before, everything was about Hyd only.

Now a lot of focus is on our side.
