ARYA Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Proud of you madam. She is from chodavaram (vizag dist) Proud of you madam. She is from chodavaram (vizag dist)******************************Muthyam Lakshmi from Chodavaram, known as ‘Walking Queen’, unleashes her passion for walking, running, discus throw, and shot put, and shares her new-found interest that took shape very late in her life.In an interview to The Hindu , she talks about her redefined journey during the last 15 years. Displaying ahandful of gold and silver medals, she says that she has lost count of her medals. “My first walking competition was in my hometown when I was 60 years old, where I took part just for fun. Much to everyone’s surprise, I won a gold medal,” she says, with a childlike chuckle. Since then, there has been no looking back for her. Whether is 800-metre, 400-metre, or 200-metre walk or run, Lakshmi has been part of dozens of national and international competitions, and has emerged a champion in various categories. “The most memorable events included the Asian Master Athletics Championships-2010 held in Kuala Lampur and the 17{+t}{+h}Asia Masters Athletics Championships in Taiwan, where I secured gold and silver medals respectively,” she says. After her husband’s death, she has been leading an independent life in Chodavaram and frequents the city to spend time with her sons and daughter. In her free time, she knows how to make others happy. “I teach art and craft for schoolchildren. Many schools engage me as a tailoring or pot-painting trainer,” she says. In her mid-seventies, Lakshmi is the busiest person and starts her day pretty early. “The secret to blowing away old-age blues lies in keeping yourself occupied. When you are happy from within, no external force can actually affect you. Thankfully, the balance between physical exertion and mental happiness keeps me away from diabetes and blood pressure,” she sums up.
