Pena Palace – the Historic Jewel in Sintra, Portugal

 

 

 

 

 

Pena Palace, Sintra, Portugal. The Romanticist castle stands on the top of a hill, approaches the historic city and looks stunning. It is enlisted as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and often is in a tourists’ route, who come here from Lisbon, that is adjacent to Sintra.

Commissioned by Ferdinand II in the 19th century the palace was built on the ruins of a monastery and served as a summer residence for the royal family. Besides the amazing architecture, Pena park and panorama, that opens from the hill, the interior is fully furnished, preserved and open for the visitors.

Hallstatt, Salzkammergut, Austria. Situated on the banks of the Hallstätter lake, the idyllic village has a very long history, that dates back thousands of years. Hallstatt also has the oldest known salt mine and has been producing salt since the Late Neolithic Age.

The visitors can learn about its history in the Hallstatt Museum. As well as about a peculiar tradition of burying the citizens in the Middle Ages: due to a lack of space, every ten years the bones were exhumed. Today the decorated bones are on a display at the chapel.

In winter the village attracts skiers and snowboarders, who come to enjoy the snow and mountains. The salt mine and its tower, from which a gorgeous panoramic views open, offers a fun day trip for the families. Hiking, biking, boating and swimming in the lake are among the most popular activities in summer.

The Jacobite, Scottish Highlands, Scotland. The stream train encompasses one of the most beautiful routes in the world – the Scottish Highlands. The line takes off from Fort William, passes Glenfinnan viaduct, historic Arisaig village and other sites until arrives at its final destination – Mallaig.

The two hour journey is famous for the amazing landscapes. Fort William is the biggest city in the area, sprawled in the shadow of Ben Nevis – the highest mountain in Britain. Mallaig is a fishing port with many restaurants – a great place to have lunch during an hour and a half stop, after which the train goes back.

At 1452 m high, Castelluccio is the highest village in the Apennines. Officially established in the 13th century, the settlement was inhabited even earlier by the Romans. The fertile slopes are cultivated and famously give a lentils harvest.

But for the travelers Castelluccio is known as a skiing, horseback riding and trekking destination. In the town there are also hang-gliding and para-gliding schools, that offer an unforgettable flight. A Wonderful Hike along the Schlegeis Lake in Tyrol, Austria

 

 

 

 

 

Schlegeis Lake, Tyrol, Austria. The Zillertal valley is a striking place, full of lakes. Schlegeis and other four are artificial lakes that are surrounded with mountains, thus creating a wonderful landscape. Climbing and hiking in these amazing surroundings are the most popular activities.

Schlegeis Alpine Road is 13.3 km long and begins at 1 km above sea level. Many twists and turns run through stunning places and four natural rock tunnels. Visitors are even offered a power plant tour, which introduces the dam.

The Hill of Crosses – Utterly Sacred Place in Lithuania

 

 

 

 

The Hill of Crosses, Siauliai, Lithuania. The hill is one of the most famous sites in the country. The origins of the tradition to make a pilgrimage and leave a cross are uncertain, however, it is associated with the 1831 Uprising. After a riot people used to leave crosses in the memory of those, who were lost in a battle.

The tradition has been maintained during the decades until this day and it continues. It is estimated that there are almost 200 000 crosses on the hill. They include crucifixes, carvings, statues of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary. A lot of rosaries are hung on the bigger crosses. The artifacts from various decades make a unique display of folk art.

Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses in 1993 and declared it the site of hope, peace, love and sacrifice. Pilgrimages to the hill signify resistance against the wars and terror, since it has survived the country’s occupation. The hill is one of the most visited and authentic sites in Lithuania.

Cochem, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The settlement was founded much earlier than it was first mentioned in the historic documents in 886. Today Cochem fascinates with the very well preserved historic architecture, which spans from Medieval ages to the late 19th century. Cochem’s Imperial Castle, that stands high on a hill, is the most significant and impressive site.

Cochem is located in Mosel Valley – area rich of vineyards. Therefore, it is famous for the regional wines, that can be explored on a Wine Express tour. However, it is best to explore Cochem while hiking or with a rented bicycle. The town is small, but there is plenty to see and do, while on a short weekend trip.
