HYDERABAD: In what could come in the way of Vijayawada-Guntur being considered for building the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, scientists clearly say that the region is a seismically active zone.

A note prepared by the Geological Survey of India's earthquake geology division, Southern Region, Hyderabad, clearly indicated the seriousness of the issue.

The paper, circulated in June 2014, said the high frequency value (9-10Hz) located along the pediment slopes south west of Gunadala and hill range north of Mangalgiri areas are not even suitable for single-storied buildings.

According to it, Vijayawada is bounded by the Indrakiladri hills constituting a part of the Eastern Ghats granulite belt which is of relatively lower elevation.

"The low fundamental frequency of ground motion occupies the soft sediment areas where buildings of 3 or more storeys are not suitable. High amplification occurs around Mandalam, southwest of Nidamarru, north of Tadepalle and south of Nunna along the Krishna river bank," the GSI report said.

Researchers of IIIT, Hyderabad, who are conducting studies on the vulnerability of Vijayawada, say there are about 26 faults and lineaments in around Vijayawada in the radius of 300 km.

All these faultlines and lineaments are potential sources of tremors that would have great impact on Vijayawada city.

However, when such a disaster would strike the region cannot be predicted, the researchers say. "Some faultlines become suddenly active while some become passive. What is in store cannot be predicted," said D Neelima Satyam, a researcher from IIIT-Hyderabad.

Neelima, a researcher in the earthquake engineering department, whose studies revolve around seismic activity and its impact on super structures on the ground, says "Regions appear safe till they are hit by disaster. Bhuj was considered safe until an earthquake struck it in 2001. Similarly, Jabalpur looked safe. We were proved wrong when it was rocked by an earthquake in 1997", she said.

According to Neelima, Vijayawada is one of the 63 cities identified by the government of India as seismic- risk areas. The identification of these cities is the outcome of the efforts put up by GoI following the Bhuj earthquake for a national level microzonation of India.

According to the scientists, Vijayawada is a seismically vulnerable area because it falls in zone three of the earthquake vulnerability code of India and this has triggered several in-depth studies to map active faults in order to understand the neo tectonic activities and seismogenic capability of these faults or lineaments. A comparative study (2014) of Delhi and Vijayawada done by Neelima and K S Rao of Delhi-IIT, quoting geological data, warned that the city is likely to be hit by earthquakes due its environmental imbalances and irregularities.

Vijayawada's vulnerability has become a hot topic among researchers such as Akhila Manne, R Balaji etc.

The general assessment from these studies is that the coastal city, which occupies an area of 119.8 sq km and located in zone -3, is vulnerable even against average earthquakes.

The hazard maps generated from these studies show the liquefaction, a phenomenon where soil loses its strength and stiffness when hit by earthquake, would cause damage in areas such as Jammidoddi, YV Rao Hospital, Gunadala, Moghulrajapuram, Hanumanpeta, Madhuranagar, Ayyappa Nagar, Jawahar Autonagar, Enkipadu, Satyanarayanapuram.

These maps are prepared to create awareness about the foundations resistant to liquefaction.

According to some researchers, even Ongole also is located in the seismic fault area.
