Meet Sachin’s special fan...
There are fans, and then there is Sudhir Kumar Gautam who actually gets free passes for all his matches from Sachin Tendulkar himself.
gaut.jpg
Sudhir Kumar Gautam with Sachin
The 30-year-old fan from Bihar, who has been following Sachin to nearly all his matches for the past eight years, travelled to Bangalore (without a ticket!) for Saturday’s Mumbai Indians versus Royal Challengers at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
He’ll be easy to spot: A thin, wiry man with a haircut that’s shaped like the map of India in tricolour, waving the national flag vigorously.

CRAZY RIDE
Most of the time, Gautam follows Sachin on a cycle. He told Bangalore Mirror, “On November 1, 2003, India took on Australia in Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. I cycled to Mumbai from Muzaffarpur in Bihar and even met him at his house before the match. He treated me very nicely.”

Twice, the Sachin fanatic actually ran into the grounds. “On November 6, 2003, India was playing New Zealand in Cuttack and I jumped onto the field to meet my Sachin. Then again, on November 15, the same year, Sachin hit a century against New Zealand. I ran and fell at Sachin’s feet. That’s when the security came running to take me away but Sachin told them not to hit me,” he reminisced.

That did it. Since then, Gautam has been getting passes for almost all Tendulkar matches from the Master Blaster himself.

SAYING NO TO SACHIN
However, the constant travel with no source of income is beginning to take its toll. “I have been following Mumbai Indians since IPL started. I couldn’t do so in 2009 when the venue shifted to South Africa. This year, I’ve exhausted my money and though I want to watch the match between Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians in Kolkata, I don’t think I have enough time or money to follow the team,” said Gautam.

Though Sachin offered him money, he did not take it. He has no particular reason for refusing except for the fact that he has great respect for the star.

“Sachin has been very kind to me. When I went to his house, I even rode with him in his BMW,” he said.

“Money or no money, I will reach Mumbai on April 24. After all, it’s Sachin’s birthday,” he said.

TO HELL WITH THE JOB
Gautam is so obsessed that he even quit his job for Sachin. “In 2006, India was to play Pakistan. I wanted to go and watch Sachin play. I was working with Sudha Diary in Muzaffarpur but they refused to foot my travel expenses and wouldn’t give me leave either. So I just left the job,” said the defiant fan who has a wikipedia site named after him.

He then decided to cross the border on his famed bicycle. “I started preparing for the journey in January since I knew it would take time to get my visa, passport and other things in place. On February 12, I crossed the border and stayed at Pakistan Chacha’s house. On February 13, when India played Pakistan, I saw Sachin playing.”

Sachin fan pedals to Bangladesh

A fan of Sachin Tendulkar today pedalled into Bangladesh from the Indian border at Petrapole in North 24 Parganas district to watch the India-Bangladesh Test series.
sp5.jpg
Sudhir Kumar Gautam, who rode a cycle with the Tricolour and the Bangladesh national flag on the handle-bars, told reporters he had met Sachin in Mumbai in 2003 and hoped to meet him again in Bangladesh.

“I will watch the Tests from May 18 to 22 and again from May 25 to 29,” Gautam, who has a passport and valid travel documents, said.

Gautam, a dairy worker from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, said he had earlier pedalled to Jamshedpur from Muzaffarpur to watch the India-West Indies match at Keenan Stadium in 2002.

“I had sought an appointment with Sachin there and the following year I reached Mumbai on my cycle in 18 days from Muzaffarpur to meet him,” said Gautam, who has shaved his hair to resemble the map of India.

He said he had also met Sourav Ganguly in Kolkata in 2004 and Virendra Sehwag in Delhi the following year. “I have a personal rapport with them.” He also pedalled from Muzaffarpur to Pakistan in January last year to watch India’s cricket matches.

Gautam, who was seen off at the border by cricket enthusiasts, said he had withdrawn his entire provident funds to watch cricket matches since 2002.

“Like Abdul Jalil, known as ‘Cricket Chacha’ in Pakistan, I would like to be recognised as the ‘Indian Cricket Brother’ by the BCCI,” he said.

He said he had also begun collecting funds to go and watch the India-Australia series beginning after four months. — PTI

Ferraris, vada pavs and now litchis:

Sachin Tendulkar has been the recipient of unusual gifts in the past - a Ferrari from FIAT, and 35 vada pavs from Vinod Kambli to cite a couple. He also receives 1000 litchis - yes 1000 - every year from an adoring Indian fan. Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary
says that Tendulkar gives him match tickets and in an outlandish show of gratitude, he's been delivering an absurd number of fruits to his idol since 2004. Sudhir also goes to extraordinary pains to watch cricket, even of the dullest variety. He rode a
bicycle all the way to Bangladesh to watch the Indians in action and hopes to return in time to harvest his litchis.

Sachin is this fan's match ticket

His statistics are interesting — 39 ODIs and five Tests in the last three years. That’s the number of matches Sudhir Kumar Gautam has watched, free of cost, courtesy tickets from Sachin Tendulkar himself.

For, Gautam, 26, is no ordinary cricket fan. His love for Tendulkar has him cycle all the way to match venues his trips include one to Lahore too from his home in Muzaffarpur.

For the Indian team, Gautam is a now permanent fixture, with Tendulkar ensuring that he gets a ticket on the eve of every big match.

He was at the IPCL Stadium on Tuesday on the eve of the West Indies-India ODI.

"I first met him in Mumbai in 2003 during an ODI. And, I have been there to cheer my hero and the team since then," said Gautam, as he waved an Indian flag. "All I do is attend the practice sessions before every match and wave the Indian flag. Tendulkar unfailingly gives me a ticket before boarding the team bus. He likes me a lot," added Gautam.

The love for the game reflects on his face, painted in the tricolour and an Indian flag drawn on his tonsured head.

"Watch me tomorrow. I am going to paint my entire body and have Tendulkar’s name on my back," he said.

He even claimed to have visited the batting maestro’s home in Mumbai. He also boasts of knowing every team member.

"I travel from one venue to another on my bicycle and use the train only if necessary. I don’t spend much on transportation," said Gautam. "I cycled my way even to Lahore in Pakistan in February 2006 to watch an ODI.

I had a tough time getting a visa but managed to convince the Pakistan embassy," he said. Such is his love for cricket that he has chosen to remain a bachelor.

"I wish to follow the Indian team to every part of the world. And, that will not be possible if I get married," said Gautam, adding that he took this decision at the cost of making his parents unhappy.

Gautam now has his eyes on the World Cup in the West Indies and is planning to request Tendulkar for tickets.

"I want to see my hero play in all World Cup ties this year and I will request him to hand me some entry passes," said Gautam.

Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary, a cricket fan, has the Indian flag painted on his body by an artist in Amritsar on Saturday. In support of the cricket series between Pakistan and India, Chaudhary is on a bicycle journey which began on January 19 in Bihar and will
end at the Wagah Border on Sunday.

Police apologise to Sachin fan

A senior police official was forced to tender apology after assaulting a die-hard Sachin fan at Green Park Stadium on Sunday.

Buzz up!
Sudhir Kumar Gautam, a native of Muzaffarpur Bihar, was thrashed by the police when he tried to shake hands with his 'idol' during Indian team's practice session on Sunday evening. His his body was painted in tri-colours and he had a national flag in his hand. The die-hard Sachin fan was kicked and dragged by policemen including a senior official.

Tendulkar felt sympathy for the man and he himself came to the rescue of his fan when he was told that the fan was being thrashed by police. He reported the whole incident to IG GL Meena and also asked him to inform him of the action taken on guilty
policemen.

Gautam, a cricket buff, came to Kanpur by cycling all the way from his home town Muzaffarpur.

Gautam said that he had been following Tendulkar since 2003 and the Master Blaster had always given him entry passes so that he could cheer the members of the Indian team. "This has happened with me for the first time," he said in a choked voice

IG GL Meena said that the concerned officer did not know whether the person was known to Tendulkar and he had tendered an apology in this regard.

A fan who gifts Sachin 1,000 litchis every year.
24-india-fan.jpg
He sends 1,000 litchis to Sachin Tendulkar every year in appreciation for the match tickets that the batting maestro gives him. He once threatened self-immolation if he was not given lifelong guarantee of tickets to watch all India matches.

Meet Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary, the cricket-crazy fan who has the Indian flag painted on his body. With his entire torso, face and his head painted in the colours of the national flag with the words 'Sachin Tendulkar' boldly written over, the 26-year-old from Bihar could be seen cheering for the Indian team by tirelessly waving a huge Indian tricolour at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

"I have dedicated my entire life to cricket, and there is no looking back at my decision," Chaudhary, who is also a regular at all matches in India, said.

"Sachin has promised me that he would provide me with the tickets of all international matches played in the country, and he is living up to his words. He is like a god to me," said Chaudhary.

As a gesture of gratitude, Chaudhary travels down to Tendulkar's Mumbai home to present him with litchis every summer.

"I have been presenting him 1,000 litchis every year since 2004. By the time I return to India after this Test match, the litchis would be ripe and I will take another 1,000 for him soon," he said excitedly.

"I have also presented litchis to Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly.
And I have
promised Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh that I would also send them the litchis this year,''[LOOK THIS CALLED REAL SACHINISM]" said Chaudhary, who has travelled from his native Muzaffarpur district to Bangladesh on his bicycle for the current series.

While Tendulkar has assured him of tickets in the matches he plays, Chaudhary is worried of the time after Tendulkar retires.

"Last year Sachin did not play a match and I missed that because only he gives me the tickets. After that I met the cricket board president Pawar thrice in Delhi and requested him to guarantee me one match ticket for my entire life. I don't want any
money," he said.

Chaudhary met Pawar thrice in six days in April last year, but he failed to eke out a guarantee from him.

"After he ignored me twice, I took an appointment in the name of another person. I covered my painted body with a 'chadar' (sheet) and removed it in front of him," he said of his meeting.

"I told him clearly that if he does not guarantee me one ticket for every international match in India, I will immolate myself in protest.

He persuaded me not to do so, but did not give me any guarantee either." Chaudhary is a bachelor and said he has decided to remain single entire life.

"I don't want to ruin a girl's life by marrying her because I am always travelling to watch matches. It's because even after Sachin retires, I will continue to follow and encourage the Indian team," he said.

Chaudhary used to work in a milk company in Muzaffarpur and later passed an examination to become a teacher. But after the cricket bug bit him, he quit the job. "I now survive on public support," he said unashamedly, without elaborating on his source of income.
