The gang tried to drag the woman away with them but the couple fought them off.After surviving the battle of their lives, the couple headed straightaway for New Town police station where officers brusquely told them that they would not accept a complaint unless the woman got herself medically checked in a hospital, says the husband.It is the police's responsibility to get a rape complainant examined. TOI has pictures that show horrific bruises on the 24-year-old survivor's face. The couple refused to give up and contacted a senior officer in Bidhannagar commissionerate after which police registered an FIR. However, no one has been arrested so far although the assault was on Rajarhat Main Road and the attackers were clearly locals.The couple was passing through Chandiberia area of New Town on a bike when six to eight men blocked their way around 12.15am. "We were returning home when we saw a group of men openly taking alcohol by the roadside. They stopped our bike and threatened my wife to accompany them. When I protested, they grabbed her hand and dragged her off the bike. I turned white in fear as they started dragging her away from me. I mustered some courage and pounced on them. Both of us tried to put up a fight. My wife was traumatized and almost collapsed crying for help but we continued to resist," he said. Thwarted by the unexpected fightback, the goons snatched the couple's cellphones, and the woman's gold chains and bracelets before fleeing, says the complaint. "They also tried to take my bike away but failed," he added. The husband says he chased them but lost sight of them in the darkness.There were other revellers returning home but all of them ignored their cries for help, says the couple. A few days ago, an actress was molested at the doorstep of her house in south Kolkata. There were people around but no one bothered to help her.The couple's ordeal did not end there. They headed for New Town police station but to their dismay, the officers asked them to "conduct a medical test" before lodging a complaint. It was 1am. Traumatized and battered, they contacted a senior commissionerate officer who ensured that a complaint was registered.An officer of Bidhannagar said they are investigating the case in all seriousness. "We were patrolling several areas to stop any untoward incidents during the New Year celebrations. Several police pickets were posted in areas like Rajarhat crossing, Baguihati crossing, Jorabagan, Hathiara and VIP Crossing. We have received the complaint about the harassment of the couple and are looking for the culprits," he added.
