SSR is okay man. Maniratnam is better than okay. both are bad. Maniratnam has better aesthetic tastes, visual and aural, since he's from the elite of the elite.

 

I know some don't like Mani's movies. But it doesn't take away from the kind of command he has on the medium. I don't think Rajamouli has it.

 

With or without AR Rahman, Maniratnam would have made decent films. He would have found some one else.

 

This thread is only about Charan growing as an actor. Mani can help him - It's a surprise he chose him in the first place. It means he thinks he can use Charan somehow in his movies. I just think Charan should've taken the opportunity, instead of making commercial calculations.

mani made his first movie when I was in diapers. SSR eppudu? 2000s lo kadha. SSR kooda shed ki ekke time osthundi wait cheyyi. @3$%

 

Mani dropped Ilayaraja at his peak. One of the reasons he dropped him is because he wanted to make different kind of movies, not because he wanted to catch a fad. 

 

Actually, he was the one who started the fad. He can and will drop AR Rahman if he wants to. Although its too late in his career now for such changes. AR Rahman may drop Mani now @3$%

 

AR Rahman is not indispensable to Mani, and Mani is not very important to Rahman. There are dozens of directors and composers they can choose to work with.

 

AR Rahman's music has never dominated any movie as far as I know. The day it does, tata bye bye to Rahman, like it was for Ilayaraja. Mani only works with people who listen to him. @3$%

maniratnam's films like geetanjali, sakhi, the recent one, and some others, they all don't take themselves seriously. Its the viewers and critics that take those films seriously and brand it as this and that.

 

He's not trying to make a great film, or a classic. He's just trying to make money. just like SSR. That's why I compare Mani only with commercial directors. 

 

did he succeed? Ofcourse he did. May be not to the extent Rajamouli did by making a 1000crores movie, but he has his own set of fans for over 30yrs. Its good enough for a commercial director.

 

I bet that you won't find Mani talking about himself or his movies in glowing terms in any function or interview. Or stress how hard he worked for it.

Big difference: Maniratnam can make a great film, if he's not too greedy about making money. I doubt SSR can even make a decent film.

 

SSR is too stuck with masala in movies.

 

In short, Mani represents us. mediocre chennai upper class.

specific ga ante, b grade acting, dialogues in rajamouli films, b grade scripts, b grade themes.

 

Mani flims lo, max a grade acting untadhi. dialogues takkuva untadhi. His films are mostly visual. b grade script undachu, but the scenes will still be charming, because he doesn't let his actors talk and talk and talk. Although in his recent movies, he's letting them talk too much :giggle:

I agree SSR is improving with every film. But even at his best, SSR won't come close to Mani.

 

SSR cannot make a film like Iruvar. Mani can make a film like Baahubali,. May be he will make it if his health allows it.

 

In fact, he tried to do it few years ago. But dropped out because he couldn't find buyers willing to risk it on him :giggle:

 

It was to bring a great Tamil classic called Ponniyin Selvan. It is an incredible story spanning 3-4 generations. Hope Mani revives the project.

If mani was to have made this scene, he would've made it matter of factly. He won't focus on the girl's breasts or her neck or something.
