flat 10% duty man for traders and brokers if they import from outside...that's why price is high in india than outside currently....this is the reason why gold is cheap in dubai and people buy it from there........from next year india govt. is thinking to reduce the duty to 2% and compete with dubai so more goldsmiths will get jobs in india.

actually if you thinking to bring back gold to US when you fly out from india, you can show purchase receipt of gold to customs officer and they will issue certificate of export declaration so you can avoid customs fee..follow below link for details:
