I was an NCC cadet that attended the Republic day parade when I was in school. So I wanted to be a soldier earlier as well, and I tried to get into NDA and barely lost out.

That said the option to be a part of the US Army didn't exist earlier it exists now. What's your problem if some people avail that opportunity?? It's not like they are treated with kid gloves, I repeat.

EVERY SOLDIER GOES THROUGH THE SAME BASIC COMBAT TRAINING AND IS ALWAYS PREPARED TO BE READY IN CASE OF A WAR, YOU AREN'T GIVEN ANY SPECIAL PREFERENCE BECAUSE OF YOUR AGE OR THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE A FAMILY THAT'S AFRAID OF YOU GOING TO WAR.

I was also a NCC and had to show up at RDC too. I think you are under the misconception of fighting for your own country vs enrolling into some other country's military program to safeguard their interests, however goal of all soldiers is the same irrespective of the country.

The point you are missing is MAVNI is another country's program and there is some level of interest in securing the country's immigration benefits through it.

However, I would have more respect for your rant if you had suggestes joining Indian army instead of MAVNI to those enrolling to MAVNI.

My close friend is in Indian Navy as a physician and I am extremely proud of him.

Good for him. I have a Brigadier General in my family and told him about my MAVNI ambitions, he never said he wouldn't respect me because I am going to fight another country's Army. End of the day it depends on which nation you want to settle down. I see myself settling down in US long term and want to have a respectful life here, I have no intentions of going back to India so for me MAVNI is the right choice.

For those that eventually want to go back to India, MAVNI isn't the right choice. So it all depends on your personal preferences. People immigrate to US from India in large numbers for a particular reason, the reason being that US provides better life to them than their own nation which they grew up in. So there's no wrong in fighting and defending a nation you love and see yourself living in, even if it's not one that you grew up in.

Not necessarily you need to join MAVNI if you love this country, their people, and want to immigrate here. There are several other legal routes. I believe it's most unlikely that people of different nationality especially India want to come to thisvcountry to join MAVNI. Serving in the military probably involves a bit of patriotism as well, don't you think so?

Anyways, you rant was about respecting people who have intentions to serve this country as soldiers. My argument is that when there is a bit of give and take involved in it, it becomes more of a business. You serve the country and you will get a citizenship, that's a business what's so great about it?

I had an ambition to always be in the Army. I am too old to join Indian Army now, I tried to join the Indian Army earlier when I was 17-18 through the NDA route and lost out on it narrowly. Also I have lived in this nation for more than 10 years now and am very comfortable living here.

I see your point though, fighting for a nation you grew up in might seem more patriotic than fighting for a nation that you immigrated to. It's perhaps true as well. But then give and take is involved in everything, even the Indian Army. There are tons of people that join the Indian Army for the benefits they avail, including the tangible(Army career, free education for children, subsidized food etc) and intangible aspects of those benefits(patriotism, respect in society, love for the nation) etc. Again that's there with every profession you choose, it's unlikely that anyone even in the Indian Army would volunteer to do so if they received no such benefits. But of course I am not saying that's the major reason why they do it, it's specific to each person.

Who's talking about considering someone great because they joined through MAVNI. We are talking about NOT disrespecting people that have taken up this route. What right do people have to disrespect someone that chooses to join US Army when they themselves rant and crib about the extended delay of GCs etc etc. Why look down upon someone's life choices? Do you consider yourself superior because you don't want to join the US Army. I hope not. End of the day it's my life and I choose to do what I do. I have garnered enough respect from US Citizens and people that served in the US Armed forces here, a bunch of john doe's on an online forum won't deter or change that.
